Artist Fun Fact: The moment my friend gave me an old streetlamp, I knew exactly what I was going to make! The red air compressor tank was the perfect size for Spencer’s body. I suggest people be “on guard” around him.
The Legend of Spencer the Fencer
In a quiet corner of an old industrial yard, where rusted machines whispered stories of their working days, an artist saw potential in the forgotten. From heaps of discarded metal and broken tools, he envisioned a guardian — a figure who would stand for renewal, resilience, and respect for the earth.
The artist gathered his materials: a discarded streetlamp whose patterned glass resembled a fencer’s mask, an old red compressor tank that once powered factory tools, and a slender silo rod, bent but unbroken, to serve as a foil.
Piece by piece, the artist welded, shaped, and breathed life into the creation. When Spencer the Fencer was finished the artist proclaimed him Knight of the Discarded.
Legend says that on the new moon, just after dusk, Spencer’s lamp-head flickers to life, casting a soft glow across the yard. In the shadows, he practices his fencing forms with graceful precision, slicing through the air as if dueling invisible foes.
Locals claim that his movements are not for battle, but for balance — a dance between destruction and creation, reminding all who see him that even what’s thrown away can fight for a second chance.
Over time, Spencer became a symbol of transformation. Children visiting the sculpture would leave their broken metal toys at his feet, offerings to the spirit of renewal. Artists and environmentalists alike spoke of him as a protector of the planet’s forgotten materials — a champion of the idea that beauty can rise from waste.
Even now that Spencer is part of a traveling exhibit, the legend endures – and after dusk on each new moon, when the lamplight flickers just right, you might catch a glimpse of Spencer the Fencer dueling in the dark shadows, standing tall with his reclaimed foil raised high — a silent promise that nothing truly lost is beyond redemption.
